Comino and the Malta Blue Lagoon: Private Boat Charters

The Malta Blue Lagoon is the most recognisable stretch of water in the country. The turquoise colour is real, the clarity is real, and the only way to reach it is by sea. Most people arrive on the public ferry from Ċirkewwa. What that looks like in July is a crowded jetty, a packed beach, and a two-hour window before the return boat leaves.

A private boat charter is a different day entirely. You have control over your group, your boat, and your pace of the trip. Malta Catamaran Charters has been running day charters to Comino and the Blue Lagoon for over ten years, and we know how to personalise trips to your liking.

How to Book a Comino Charter

We depart from Roland Marina and Sliema. The journey up Malta’s west coast takes roughly 90 minutes each way. When we arrive at the lagoon, we anchor, and the day is yours. No ferry timetable, no shared space with strangers — no having to leave before you’re ready.

We have boats for groups of 10 to 50, so whether it’s a group of friends, a family, a corporate event or a large celebration, there’s a boat that fits your needs.

What You Get On the Day

A full-day Comino charter runs around 8 hours. Here’s what that typically looks like:

  • Morning departure from Roland Marina or Sliema
  • 90-minute journey up Malta’s west coast
  • Anchor at the Blue Lagoon where you can swim, snorkel and relax in the beautiful lagoon bay
  • Option to explore the Crystal Lagoon or Santa Marija Bay on the other side of the island
  • Food and drinks on board: we can provide a BBQ on the boat for €40 per person, including drinks — see our food and drinks section on services
  • Pick-up and drop-off: we do not pick up from hotels
  • Late afternoon return; purchase extra hours to extend your day and catch the sunset

Our skippers know the lagoon extremely well. In peak summer they time the departure to arrive before the public ferry crowds build. If you want to explore beyond the Blue Lagoon, the Cicciolina Mia and Shirina Mia both operate specifically on this route.

If you want to combine Comino with the Blue Grotto on Malta’s south coast, we run that as a combined route on the same day.

About the Blue Lagoon and Comino Island

Catamaran anchored at the Blue Lagoon Malta

Comino is Malta’s smallest inhabited island, sitting between Malta and Gozo. The Blue Lagoon is a sheltered bay on its western side with turquoise water, a white sandy seabed, and some of the clearest conditions in the Mediterranean. If you love snorkelling, it’s one of the best snorkelling spots on the island.

Beyond the Blue Lagoon, the Crystal Lagoon on the eastern side is quieter and just as clear. St Mary’s Tower, a 17th-century watchtower, gives you views across to Malta and Gozo. Santa Marija Bay is calm and shallow. On a public ferry you get a taste of the Blue Lagoon. On a private charter you can cover the whole island and truly experience it like a local.

Best Time to Book a Comino Charter

May, June and September offer the best combination of good weather, calm seas and manageable crowds. July and August are busier, but the earlier you depart, the better the experience. We can advise on timing when you book.

Charters run from April through to October.
